10 Aug Farewell Cape Lookout
Wow, how the time has flown. I can not believe my time here at Cape Lookout National Seashore is over. The sadness still has not hit me, but I know I will miss this park dearly. I have made so many great friends and experienced many great adventures. Here are some of the highlights from my summer:
- Found and collected data for over 120 sea turtle nests and false crawls
- Responded to 3 sea turtle strandings
- Helped band 10 American Oystercatcher and 24 Black Skimmer chicks
- Completed 2 night patrols to look for nesting mothers to satellite tag
- Featured on NPS/CSU’s Outside Science Inside Parks (hopefully episode being released this fall)
- Got more experience using ArcGIS
- Learned how to ride an ATV on the beach
- Filmed footage of sea turtle patrolling with SCA interns in the park
and for some highlights that were not internship related
- Went paddleboarding and saw dolphins and stingrays
- Visited Shackleford Banks and saw the wild horses
- Went on a boat cruise to watch fireworks for July 4th
- Horseback riding on the beach (even saw wild cattle!)
- Parasailing
- Visited the North Carolina Aquarium
- Bought and flew a sea turtle kite!
- Enjoyed the ocean view from our park housing daily
- Learned to cook and become best friends with my roommate/Scientists in Parks intern Rachel
I am so incredibly thankful and blessed to have partaken in this internship. Everyone was so incredibly nice and supportive in training me in the field. I am really sad to leave but have a feeling this magical seashore will draw me back for future visits.
