This summer has been nothing short of remarkable, reaffirming my passion for fieldwork and research. Almost every day, I’d find myself marveling at the breathtaking view of the Salish Sea and the Olympic Mountain range from my work site. Bald eagles and foxes have become regular companions on my workdays. No office could ever compete with that! It’s moments like these that make me feel truly grateful for the path I’ve chosen.
The direct impact of my work has been immensely fulfilling. There’s something special about witnessing the positive changes that come from our efforts. I’ve really enjoyed working with all the different species on the island including butterflies, moths, and bats.
As my island adventure draws to a close next week, I can’t help but reflect on the incredible experiences I’ve had here. Whale sightings and outdoor rock climbing will become cherished memories, and I’ll surely miss them dearly. Living on this island has made it feel like a tight-knit community. I’ve become so familiar with the locals that I can spot three familiar faces as soon as I step into any of the two grocery stores in town.
But as one chapter ends, another begins, and I’m eagerly looking forward to my upcoming trip to DC! Well, okay, maybe the new Barbie movie too.
Meeting the other Mosaic interns from Alaska, California, Florida, and the Virgin Islands promises to be an absolute blast. Mosaic’s reach is far and wide, and I’m excited to hear about their adventures, like horseback riding trips and thrilling bear sightings. And let me not forget the incredible Mosaic staff who keep this program running smoothly, even amidst my frantic text messages.
As this summer ends, I find myself eagerly looking forward to the next chapter of my career in natural resources. Spending time outdoors, surrounded by nature’s wonders, has become a part of me. I’m convinced that being close to nature is good for the soul, and I can’t wait to continue dedicating my time to this meaningful and fulfilling career path. Here’s to many more adventures, discoveries, and unforgettable moments in the great outdoors!
