Eel Grass and Cape Cod Bay

Eel Grass and Cape Cod Bay

This past 2 weeks we have mainly been harvesting Eel grass reproductive shoots in different bodies of water here on Cape Cod. We have done seed collection in Cape Cod Bay, Pleasant Bay, Ryders Cove, and even went out to Nantucket Harbor. It has been really interesting seeing all the different beds of eelgrass and the life that inhabits them. It is also interesting to see how the eelgrass beds change. The first time I went to go survey eelgrass in Cape Cod Bay I saw little to no eelgrass beds, only dead eelgrass floating above the bottom of the seafloor, we had assumed it was because of the slight storm we had previously. After coming back weeks later it was nice to see that eelgrass beds were growing along the shore again. Nantucket seems to be the healthiest area for eelgrass and all of its marine life with thick eelgrass beds and plenty of big crabs, oysters, and clams. I hope to see more improvements as we continue our research and see even more locations.
